Original Pictures’ television movie A Bear Named Winnie, starring Oscar nominee Michael Fassbender (Steve Jobs, 12 Years a Slave, X-Men), is now available to rent from Canada Screens, a site curated by Canada’s top filmmakers to showcase Canadian film. A Bear Named Winnie was one of 10 films chosen to be added to the site this year.

Set in 1914, the film tells the true story of the friendship between Lieutenant Harry Colebourn, a Winnipeg veterinary soldier in the First World War, and the extraordinary bear he named Winnie who inspired the beloved A.A. Milne character. Michael Fassbender stars as Lieut. Colebourn; co-stars include Gil Bellows, Stephen Fry, David Suchet, Aaron Ashmore and Jonathon Young.

A Bear Named Winnie was produced for CBC in 2004 and was their top-rated film that year. The film is distributed internationally by Power Entertainment in the UK. Winnie earned a Crystal Heart Award from the Heartland Film Festival, four Gemini nominations and two DGC awards.

Winnie has been digitized with iTunes specs for release on the Canada Screens website as part of a new partnership between the First Weekend Club, a national, non-profit organization that was created to help build audiences for great Canadian films, and the Canadian Media Production Association. Original Pictures thanks them, Canada Screens, Deluxe Toronto and the National Film Board for their support of the film.
